Business processes get more and more complex today. An important factor is also the integration accross different companies (for example supply chain management). Even if internet access is spreading to every days devices, there are still some areas, where it is easier or cheaper to work offline. So you can think of applications, where it would be necessary to run some part of the business process on a mobile device. Therefor you want to "undock" this process from the business process engine and transfer it to the mobile device, with all necessary data included. The real process must be locked from changes in the meantime. After working with the process offline, the results must be submitted to the process engine.

The technical possibilities on mobile devices are limited, even today. So running a full scale BPEL-Server is obviously not a option for this job.

Topic for Master Thesis

We want to develop a prototype for the described problem, on top of the open source business process engine jBPM. Your task is to investigate, how to include that behaviour in the process models (proprietary jPDL format) and how to extend JBoss jBPM (jPDL flavour) for the offline continuation. The client part should be developed as well as a prototype, taking the limited resources of mobile devices into account. The goal is to have a fully functioning prototype for the scenario.

So you should be experienced with Java SE and have at least some basic knowledge about business process / workflow engines.

Currently we search a student to do this as diploma, bachelor or master thesis. The thesis can be written in german or english and is located at the PI-Data AG in Murr (close to Stuttgart), but presence there is not a must all the time.

Offline-Fortführung von Geschäftsprozessen auf mobilen Geräten

Geschäftsprozesse werden heutzutage immer komplexer, nicht zuletzt durch die Integration von Prozessen über Unternehmensgrenzen hinweg. Auch wenn ein Internetzugang inzwischen auf vielen Endgeräten technisch möglich ist, so gibt es immer noch Bereiche, wo es einfacher und billiger ist offline zu arbeiten. Man kann sich also auch Anwendungen vorstellen, in denen es sinnvoll ist, bestimmte Teile des Geschäftsprozesses direkt auf einem mobilen Endgerät auszuführen. Dazu ist es notwendig, den Geschäftsprozess in einem definierten Zustand von der Business Process Engine abzukoppeln und auf das Gerät zu übertragen, inklusive der notwendigen Daten. In der Zwischenzeit muss der Prozess in der Engine gegen andere Änderungen geschützt sein. Am Ende muss die Arbeit am Prozess an die Business Process Engine zurückübermittelt werden, so dass die Prozessausführung dort fortsetzt.

Die technischen Möglichkeiten auf Mobilgeräten sind auch heute noch begrenzt, so dass man offensichtlich keinen echten Prozess-Server auf dem Mobilgerät einsetzen kann.

Master Thesis / Diplomarbeit

Für das beschriebene Problem möchten wir einen Prototyp erarbeiten, der auf der Open-Source Business Process Engine JBoss jBPM aufsetzt (jPDL Version von jBPM). Die Aufgabe ist dann zu untersuchen, wie das Verhalten in die jPDL-Prozessmodelle integriert werden kann. Darauf aufbauend soll JBoss jBPM erweitert sowie ein Client entwickelt werden, damit ein vollständiger Prototyp entsteht.

Sie sollten daher Erfahrung in der Entwicklung mit Java SE sowie Grundlagen der Business Process / Workflow-Engines mitbringen. 

Momentan suchen wir einen Studenten, der sich diesem Thema im Rahmen einer Diplomarbeit, Bachelor oder Master Thesis annehmen möchte. Die Arbeit kann in deutsch oder englisch verfasst werden und wird bei der PI-Data AG in Murr (bei Stuttgart) ausgerichtet, wobei aber normalerweise keine ständige Anwesenheit vor Ort erforderlich ist.
