Activiti vs. camunda fox

As a core team member of Activiti we are very committed to this open source project. Therefore we continue to participate in the further development and contribute our bug fixes and extensions we implement for the process engine (more details on BPM-Guide.de)
However if you directly compare Activiti and camunda fox, it becomes clear that Activiti is an embeddable process engine, while camunda fox is a full-blown and enterprise-ready BPM-platform:

Quality Assurance and Stabilization

Stabilizing Activiti

Stabilizing Activiti

Open Source normally is either too slow or too fast (or both at the same time): Bugfixes you urgently need won’t be available before the next release (development trunk left aside), while you get new and probably not wanted or even buggy features with that new release as well. The process engine included in camunda fox is not a “fork”, but a “branch” of the Activiti project. This means, we commit our bugfixes into Activiti, but release the related patches immediately for our customers. At the same time, we develop new features for the process engine in both branches and also transfer new features developed by other community members to the fox engine – but not before we intensively tested them inside our QA-environment. The possible effect is that there are sometimes new features in an Activiti release, you won’t get with the fox engine. But therefore you can rely on the stability of the fox engine and our approval for the use inside the tested containers and with the tested databases.

Liability Exemption

When companies use open source, they often need an explicit legal coverage: The intellectual property (IP) stays with the contributors and cannot be transfered. That is why we also offer a liability exemption and therefore cover you for all demands that could possibly be risen when you apply the camunda fox BPM-platform (and therefore also the included open source components) inside your organization.
