BPM-Basics: OCEB Fundamental

Business Process Management comprises a collection of concrete methods, procedures and technologies to improve business processes. In this seminar we will give you an overview of this collection and at the same time qualify you for the certification according to the OMG standard OCEB, which can be taken subsequent to the seminar.

What is OCEB Fundamental?

OCEB stands for OMG Certified Expert in BPM. The OMG is a world-wide established institution which is responsible, among other things, for the standards of BPMN and UML. Especially the OCEB’s proximity to BPMN is an important argument for BPM practitioners because BPMN is part of the standard repertoire of process consultant today and will be queried in detail during the OCEB exam. The OCEB Certification consists of the three levels on the right; this seminar will prepare you for the first level ‘Fundamental’.

You can find more information about OCEB on the OMG homepage.

Agenda

The two-day seminar will optimally prepare you for the OCEB certification exam. You can take the fundamental level exam at the end of the second day.
At the same time we will complement the contents of OCEB with our extensive and many years long experience from BPM projects. Thus you will learn which contents are really important for your own practical use, what’s the status quo in practical BPM trendsetting and which subjects you should be prepared for.

OCEB Contents Exam Percentage
Business Goals, Objectives
Fundamentals of general and business economics to which you should have a good command of to be able to place BPM in its right context.
8%
Business Process Concepts and Fundamentals
Basic knowledge about business processes. This part also includes some decidedly helpful techniques and theoretical models, e.g. a business process maturity model (“BPMM), which has been standardized by the OMG as well.
11%
Business Process Management Concepts and Fundamentals
The ultimate overview of BPM: Where does it come from, its current state, what makes a process oriented organisation and which role IT plays within this.
10%
Business Modeling
This part is about the “Business Motivation Model”, another standard by the OMG. The BMM helps us to describe an enterprise holistically, from their visions and goals, their strategies and tactics to their business processes and rules. Even if it appears to be academic, we already experienced it as helpful in a practical environment, in order to deduce new or better business processes and realize them on an organisational as well as technical level.
16%
Business Process Modeling Concepts
This part deals with the process modelling with BPMN. The most important symbols and syntax rules will be explained. Even if you are already using BPMN, you will find that the OMG has a certain demand concerning the understanding of BPMN – half knowledge does not lead anywhere in this section of the seminar. The current state of the OCEB exam is based upon BPMN 1, even though BPMN 2 has been adopted. In the preparation for the exam we will look at these circumstances explicitly and we will make sure that you will understand BPMN 2, but you won’t fall into the corresponding traps.
24%
Business Process Modeling Skills
This part is also about BPMN. But here the mere knowledge does not suffice anymore – one really has to be able to apply the notation. That’s why this part of the seminar is dominated by practical exercises.
16%
Process Quality, Governance, and Metrics Frameworks
There are numerous reference models and procedures which can be used for the improvement of process models. Typical representatives are SCOR, Six Sigma, Balanced Scorecard and COBIT. Every BPM expert should at least know these terms and be able to classify the terms in order to evaluate their possible use for the problem in that specific situation.

Conditions of Participation

There aren’t any special conditions of participation or admission requirement. We do recommend, however, to be familiar with the practical use of BPMN or to participate in our BPMN training. The reliable command of BPMN is the key factor to successfully pass the OCEB exam.

Language: Even though the preparation seminar will be held in German, the exam is in English. During the seminar we will explain all exam related contents in German as well as in English terms.
